Conservation and Crown lands were featured at the meeting of
the Comox Valley Naturalists Society on Sunday
April 20 at 7:30 p.m. at the Filberg Seniors Lounge,
411 Anderton Ave. in Courtenay.
"Protected Areas, Public Lands, and Conservation Biology" was the subject of
guest speaker Ken Wu of the Western Canada Wilderness Committee. His slide show
presentation on the status of BC's ecosystems within our current protected areas
system highlighted the gaps that need filling. As well, findings from the new
discipline of Conservation Biology emphasized the need for large, interconnected
protected areas. The importance of Crown lands and public overseeing of conservation
efforts, in light of the government's recent "Working Forest" initiative, was
elaborated on.
Ken Wu is Executive Director of the WCWC in
Victoria. He graduated from the University of BC's Ecological Science program
in 1995. He has been involved in BC's conservation movement for over a decade,
and has also worked as a field biologist studying flying squirrels, truffles,
and Pacific giant salamanders. Currently, he is a correspondent for the conservation
biology journal Wild Earth.
