Plants that Heal

The regular Monthly Meeting of the Comox Valley Naturalists Society will be held April 16, 2006 at 7:00 pm at the Florence Filberg Centre, 411 Anderton Avenue, Courtenay.  The featured speaker will be Dr. Christian Kumi from the University of Victoria, who will discuss medicinal plants.

The talk will include botanical description and identification of a few medicinal plants that are commonly found in our gardens and whose products are found on shelves in supermarkets and drug stores; the historical, traditional and modern uses of these plants; their known toxic side effects; and their interactions with conventional synthetic drugs, or with other plants and herbal products.  The presentation is designed for participants from all backgrounds, age groups and interests and is designed to be informative and interesting to everybody.

Dr Kumi was born in Ghana, West Africa, and studied Biochemistry at McGill University and Veterinary Medicine at the University of Munich, specializing in Pharmacology and Therapeutics. Currently, he is working with a group of scientists, worldwide, to screen and develop plant extracts which can be used for the management of Diabetes Type II.
