October 24, 2004: YNC at Lagoon Park

Frank Hovenden led the Young Naturalists Club October Explorer Day at the Airpark Lagoon with the assitance of Dave and Jocie Ingram. The Young Naturalists had good looks at a merlin, killdeer, dowitchers, Canada geese and a number of different kinds of ducks. The next Explorer Day is "Compost Critters" on November 20.

 

 

July 28, 2004: Japan Visits Lazo

Exchange Students

Forty exchange students from Japan toured Lazo Forest and Marsh with members of the CVNS botany group. The students learned aspects of natural history as well as elements of the logging and settlement history of the area.

 

July 26, 2004: CVNS Receives SEF Grant

Wetland Restoration

The CVNS received a grant of $3700 from the Shell Environmental Fund towards the CVNS Wetland Restoration Project. Now in its thirteenth year, the project includes removing invasive purple loosestrife, Scotch broom, yellow flag iris, Himalayan backberry, and knotweed species, as well as replanting with appropriate native species. The grant has been used to purchase a boat to access the wetlands and estuaries.

July 17, 2004: Parks Day

Lupin Falls Walk

Nature enthusiasts from the Comox Valley, North Island, and Nanaimo enjoyed outings in Strathcona Park led by the Comox Valley Naturalists Society on Parks Day, Saturday July 17. CVNS Director Frank Hovenden led nature walks along the Karst Creek trail and Lupin Falls trail near Buttle Lake in Strathcona Park.

March 30, 2004: Birds of a Feather
Several 'Red-feathered Swan-tallyers' gathered at the final Trumpeter Swan count of the season, the last Tuesday of March.
