December 15, 2002

A pygmy owl was one of the most exciting birds seen on the Comox Valley Audubon Christmas Bird Count. A Virginia rail was heard near the estuary.

About ninety sandhill cranes flew over downtown Courtenay, heading south.

August 18, 2002

Four red knots were reported on the northeast side of Tree Island.

June 2, 2002

A female Nashville warbler was videotaped at Mallard Pond near Union Bay.

May 26, 2002

The Strathcona Park Spring Bird Count resulted in several interesting species, including two blue-winged teal, a new record for the park.

May 5, 2002

The Comox Valley Naturalists Spring Bird Count resulted in several notable sightings including: wimbrel, marbled godwit, eared grebe, black swift, American pipit, cliff swallows, barn owls, and 919 Brant geese.

April 22, 2002

Two cinnamon teal were seen at Kye Bay.

An albino American robin was photographed foraging with other robins at Nature's Way Blueberry Farm in Courtenay.

Five western meadowlarks were seen at Comox Bay Farms (formerly know as Farquharson's).

A male mountain bluebird was seen at the perimeter of the CFB Comox airstrip.

Aberrant (leucistic) form of the dark-eyed junco was photographed in Royston at the end of January and again at the beginning of March.

February 7, 2002

A young male king eider was seen in the waters off Long Beak Point, Denman Island, from January till mid-March.
