Field Trips - 2008

CVNS Botany Group
CVNS Botany trip to Hornby Island

• Club membership is required for CVNS field trips and for some events. Members may bring one guest or family. Check ahead with the leader.
• Leaders will ask all field trip participants to sign a waiver recognizing that there are risks inherent to all outdoor activities.
• On field trips wear suitable clothing and footwear, and bring a snack or lunch. No dogs please.
• Share travelling expenses when car-pooling: 10 cents km.

Ships Point with Chris Carter
Meet at 9:30 a.m. at Riverside Park on Anderton Ave. to carpool, or meet at 10 a.m. at the Community Park at the southern end of Ship's Point Road in Fanny Bay: take the Old Island Highway to Fanny Bay, turn onto Ships Point Rd., drive over the causeway to Ships Point. Keep right on Baynes Drive & then Park Road, to the south end to the small Community Park overlooking Baynes Sound. The walk takes in the ecological reserve around the wetlands and the tidal foreshore of the Point. Everyone welcome.

Walk the length of the Comox Lake Bluffs Ecological Reserve, with a stop on the way back at the bluffs area to view early spring flowers. Meet 9:30 a.m. at Riverside Park on Anderton Ave. for carpooling.

Quadra Island with Heather & Rolf Kellerhals
The Kellerhals will lead a walk/hike around their woodlot property, taking in the eastern hardwood plantation, including some Carolinian species, along trails and forestry roads to the Heron Point outlook, a high rock bluff overlooking the local heronry of 20 nests. Violet-green and barn swallows should also be back. Meet at 8:30 a.m. at Riverside Park on Anderton Ave. to carpool to Campbell River to catch the 9:30 a.m. ferry to Quadra. Return ferries are hourly on the hour.

One Spot Trail with Gordie Fyfe
Meet at 8:30 a.m. at Riverside Park on Anderton Ave. to carpool, or meet at the end of Todd Road where the trail intersects: Take Dove Creek Road north, approx. 4.2 km past Dove Creek/Condensory Road intersection, turn right onto Todd Road (gravel road) approx. 0.8 km. & park on shoulder. Walk will highlight the history & re-planting of the former logging railway grade.  We will walk the trail section from Todd Road to Dove Creek Road and back, approx. 4.4 km.  Wear suitable footwear. All ages.

Point Holmes Low Tide with Robin Harrison
Meet at the Pt. Holmes boat launch ramp. Low tide is 1.6 feet at 3:10 pm. Wear gumboots or other waterproof footwear for walking on slippery seaweed-covered rocks. Bring gloves for turning over rocks.

Walk includes the forest as well as Wildwood Marsh (may be high water, bring gumboots). Meet at 9:30 a.m. at Riverside Park on Anderton Ave. to carpool, or meet at 10 a.m. at the Wildwood Marsh trail: turn left at Condensory Road/Burns Road intersection, turn left after approx. 1.8 km. onto Wildwood Road. Trailhead is at about 0.2 km., across from 5440 Wildwood Road, & will be marked with ribbons.
